History of Air Sports

The birth of the modern aviation era was born in the 20th century with the pioneering flights of pilots like the Wright brothers, Clement Ader and Santos-Dumont.

On June 10, 1905, Count Henri de la Vaulx, Vice President of the Aero Club of France together with Fernand Jacobs, President of the Aero Club of Belgium, and Major Moedebeck of the German Aeronautical League, saw the need to create an international federation for aeronautical activity.

The Brussels Olympic Congress approved the idea and it was quickly implemented.

The FAI continues to expand today with new air sports, adopting new objectives to reflect the evolution of society. It focuses on the worldwide development of sport aviation and all astronautic activities.

Some of the air sports that conform to this organization are skydiving, rotorcraft, paragliding, general aviation, ballooning, and drones, among others.

Hot Air Ballooning

On December 14, 1782, the French brothers Joseph De Montgolfiere and Jacques Étienne were responsible for launching the first model of a hot air balloon.

On June 4, 1783, in a public demonstration, they placed a 226-kilogram balloon made of varnished paper and cloth and then filled it with hot air. They managed to make it rise to 1800 meters high and travel 2 kilometers from the market where it was launched.

In September of the same year, they made a demonstration of the royalty with passengers. They managed to raise the first balloon with a chicken, a sheep, and a duck.

In November, the inventors took a balloon ride with royalty. They traveled 10 kilometers at an altitude of 1000 meters and with a flight time of 25 minutes.

Although it has undergone some changes over the years, the aerostatic balloon is still with us.
